For the love of Mu`uMu`u

January has been abuzz with talk of Mu‘umu‘u Month. In 2014, a tiny mu‘umu‘u movement began with Kaua‘i artist Shannon Hiramoto, who decided to celebrate the beloved, uniquely Hawai‘i dress style by rocking a different mu‘u every day that January. She posted her looks on Instagram with the hashtag #muumuumonth, inspiring countless others to follow. As the movement gained momentum, Hawaii's Governor Ige officially declared January as Mu'umu'u Month in 2016.

Whether worn every day, on Aloha Fridays, or for special events, this tradition has grown into a movement that celebrates the past, present, and future of the mu'umu'u. No longer hidden away in closets or forgotten in thrift stores, the mu'umu'u is now being embraced by a new generation. Vintage shops are thriving, and new businesses are dedicated to restoring and selling these beautiful dresses.
